Governor Jerry Brown is proposing to spend $315 million to move inmates to private prisons, county jails and other facilities in order to alleviate the overcrowding in California state prisons.

The plan would be paid for with revenues that come from the surplus created by the passing of Proposition 30, the measure we fought for to secure more funding for our schools. Our experience, research and our faith traditions tell us that investing in prisons is not the way to make our communities safer.

As OCO co-chair Rev. George Cummings said, “clergy and religious leaders in California must call on our officials to seek alternatives to prison overcrowding that focuses on investing in people.”
